Innovative Completion Technology Enhances Production Assurance in Alaskan North Slope Viscous Oil Developments
Michael T. Triolo, BP Eric R. Davis, Brian R. Buck, ConocoPhillips Alaska Rune Freyer, Easywell Solutions Lee Smith, Alaskan Energy Resources, Inc.
"Abstract In the challenging North Slope operating environment, use of innovative production equipment has provided solutions to zonal isolation and packer integrity problems in viscous oil reservoirs. Operators have employed new tools and technology utilizing expandable rubber materials to manage annular fluid flow, control solids/shale production, and achieve zonal isolation in wells where high costs, shallow depths, and long step-outs create unique completion challenges. The new technology is allowing once bypassed zones to be added to existing developments, and making future developments more economically viable..."

New technology creates a step change in drilling efficiency
At Alaska’s Alpine field, drilling more than 70 horizontal wells produced a 17% efficiency gain and reduced costs, even as the wells became more complex

"Alaska’s Alpine oil field has been developed exclusively with horizontal wells, and it has employed EOR to maintain average production of nearly 100,000 bopd over the past two years. Reservoir depths average 7,000 ft, vertical, with well depths ranging from 9,000 ft to 19,000 ft. Wells have become more complex and challenging as field development progresses..."

A Step Change in Drilling Efficiency: Application of New Technology in the Alpine Development Field
Chip Alvord, Brian Noel, ConocoPhillips Alaska Inc. Vern Johnson, SperrySun-Halliburton Energy Services / ConocoPhillips Alaska Inc. Ron Handley, David Egedahl, Eric Cribbs, SperrySun-Halliburton Energy Services Lee Smith, SecurityDBS-Halliburton Energy Services / Alaskan Energy Resources
"Abstract In the Alpine Development Field of western North Slope, Alaska, application of new technology throughout the continuous drilling of more than 70 horizontal wells has produced an impressive step change in drilling efficiency. This step change is demonstrated clearly by real time cost savings and a significant reduction in drilling times even as the wells have become more challenging both in length and complexity..."
